Our Search Begins! ...

Upon our return from our life changing adventure around the world, making slide shows from the plethora of pictures we had taken, we embarked on another adventure, around the United States, hauling our trailer home behind us!

Looking ahead to 2007, we planned a move to Europe to spend the spring and summer. Neither of us had ever lived outside the US and we believed that viewing the world from a new and different perspective was essential for global citizenship.

Our Favorite Places to Live - Delft, Puerto Vallarta and Brussels

Whenever we meet new friends, when we explain that we are Nomads searching the world for People Friendly Cities, the conversation inevitably leads to One Big Question! Folks ask "What's your favorite City?" For many years, we were perplexed about how to respond because we have savored each city, researched every one, taken many photos, and written essays to include on this web page with plenty of pictures!

Now, that we're Perched Nomads, we are reviewing many of those stories, seeking wisdom from our observations and reaching conclusions. So for all of our readers who have asked the Big Question here's the answer!

We have three favorites and they are presented here!

  • Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Searching the World for People Friendly Cities

On our first international journey in 2007, to Spain and Belgium, we discovered that People Friendly Cities were plentiful in Europe! This was not a total surprise because we had traveled in Europe many times before. The difference was that now we were using Principles to guide our research!

So, as we considered our next journey, we found ourselves yearning for a place to call our own, in a city where we could delight in the urban lifestyle we have come to value so highly. An apartment in Berlin was the obvious choice.

After a month in Berlin, we moved to Hamburg to spend another month. These experiences in Urban Living enabled us to deeply research People Friendliness!

Searching the World for "MORE" People Friendly Cities

I am proud to say that my niece Suzie has been very serious about taking care of her world and yours. She is also serious about finding the best places to live in our mutual world. She and Blair, with some pressure from friends, wrote about 3 cities, and for good reasons put them a few ranks above the rest of the world. Recently, during Suzies's rehab, she decided she had short changed other communities that also inspired them and offered them the beauty, convenience and safety, along with other attributes, to warrant a second look.

So, look. already! (back to Suzie)

In the early summer of 2009, we returned to Europe, heading to Feiberg. Here, we spent a month in a nice studio apartment where we thoroughly enjoyed life in this lovely smaller city. Seeking an escape from winter in 2009 - 2010 we headed south of the equator to Argentina where it was summer! We stayed in a lovely apartment in the Palermo area. In 2015 we decided to stay in Netherlands and settled in Nijmegen where we lived in a comfy apartment in the pedestrian centre.

These experiences enabled us to again deeply research People Friendliness.

South Africa - Amazing Animal Parks in an Interesting Country

Back in 2014, after eight years of Nomad Journeys, South Africa was still on our list to explore! Except for Egypt, the vast expanses of this great continent were still unknown to us and offered plenty of opportunities for adventure!

Naturally, our primary goal was to have close encounters with charismatic critters in their homeland. We feature three safaris where we were able to accomplish this to an amazing extent with visits to:

  • Addo Elephant Park,
  • Hluhluwe National Park and St. Lucia Estuary (to visit the hippos), and
  • Kruger National Park.

At the same time we knew that South Africa is a modern country with an eventful history. To provide some thoughts on what we learned, we offer our essay, South Africa - Our Take

Stories of City Planning - Modernization, Redevelopment or Expansion

As we explored the cities of the world, we observed the phenomenon of city planning everywhere. Many cities have their own special story about their City Plan. Modernization, Redevelopment, or Expansion often motivated these plans. We have selected three of these special stories to illustrate how some of our favorite cities are planned.

  • Amsterdam School, and
  • Singapore

Egypt - Should we or shouldn't we?
(Conclusions - Consider Egypt yet Travel with Caution!)

After our delightful summer in Germany in 2011 we returned to the USA and began to consider our next Nomad Journey - Through Egypt!

Then, in 2011, the Arab Spring had begun, President Hosni Mubarak resigned, we debated whether an Egyptian Journey was safe.   By January, 2012, we decided to go.

Our indie journey of two months was safe and amazing!   Egyptians completed a three phase parliamentary election and looked forward to presidential elections.   Now, more than a dozen years have passed and Egyptians still struggle to sort out all of the issues to reach good governance.   To compound their struggles, in 2024, the Middle Eastern countries face upheavals and violence.

While Egypt greatly needs international visitors to restore vitality to their tourist economy and create more jobs to put people back to work, we urge caution!   Be sure to check  travel.state.gov  for alerts about Egyptian travel.   If you plan to travel independently as we did, use a good guide book to plan your journey.   We prefer the Rough Guides!

A Tale of Four Cities - Rouen, LeHarve, Caen and Rennes

The Nomads decided that it was time to escape Paris and head to Normandy and Bretagne to explore the sites of the 1944 Normandie invasion. Simultaneously, we would be able to explore four cities that each felt the destructive impacts of that invasion. The centres of Caen and Le Havre were completely bombed to rubble, while Rouen lost every bridge and the waterfront industrial quarter, and Rennes suffered extensive bombing as well.

What conclusions have we reached about these four French cities?

    - Each has recovered prosperously from the ravages of war, having regained their economic vitality and their architectural heritage, but in different ways.

    - Each has remained true to the Celtic and Norman roots of this region with unique culture, cuisine and music, while celebrating the landscapes that inspired the impressionist painters.

    - In Rouen, Caen and Rennes, the student populations bring a youthful vitality while Le Havre is focused on it's Port City heritage.

    - Each city offers mobility alternatives to automobile travel through well planned and executed public transport systems.

    Searching for New Towns

Being Americans, most all of our observations of development, especially in the past 50 years or so, have been subdivisions. These tend to be single family homes on large lots, car dependent, where walking to anything is limited to visiting neighbors. We both grew up in homes such as this. Then we lived in Barcelona, Madrid, and Brussels and came to realize that this was by no means universal! But, these European cities were built long ago when life was different! We began to wonder if cities such as this were still possible in today's world. Our research discovered three fascinating examples of "New Town", one near London, another near Denver, CO, and the third near Liverpool.

India and Hong Kong - Revisited!

When we made our journey around the world in 2006 we did not carry along our laptop computers. Perhaps we were concerned about security or carrying the extra weight. Blair did carry his digital camera and during the whole journey he took many pictures. When we returned, we created slide shows to show family and friends.

Remembering the experiences of that life changing journey, we wished to return to India to experience more of this vast country and we did that in 2009. Finally, in 2019, we returned to Hong Kong and continued on to Singapore.

    We share these stories now!
